Sumposium Program & Overview

Theme:
"Growing Our Own Way: Strengthening Our Identity for the North Country's Future"

Attendees of the 9th annual North Country Symposium will explore ways in which the region can shape its own future by strengthening an identity that is embraced by its citizens, recognized by those outside the region, and supported by asset-based community development.

Providing a case study for this concept will be Ben Hewitt, author of the renowned book on "The Town That Food Saved." Hewitt will discuss how the farming community of Hardwick, VT was able to jump-start its economy and redefine its identity by capitalizing on its assets of enthusiastic young entrepreneurs and a local, sustainable food system – and what best practices from their experiences can be adopted by other communities seeking such revitalization.

Symposium attendees will participate in a morning breakout session with tracks in Health & Human Services, Business Development, and Food & Agriculture. An afternoon breakout session will feature tracks in Energy, Education, and Arts, Recreation & Quality of Life. Each discussion will be opened by local leaders of that issue area, who will present emerging initiatives in our own communities and share their own insights on how we can strengthen our North Country identity.
